Road Rally Geography News Bowl
Recommended: Have the class create a U.S. map with many important geographical landmarks.
Object of the Game: Travel across the country collecting the most rally points possible in a designated period of
30-60 minutes.
Setting up the Game: Use a playing board map of the United States. Red dots identify various landmark locations
throughout the country.
Partners or teams: Select a sticker of a different color to use as cars for the game. Place all cars on the
Nebraska/Iowa starting line.
The teacher/facilitator reads a weekly Newsbowl question in order regardless of the News Bowl point value.
Start Your Engines: Order of play is determined by a roll of the dice.
The first team begins by answering a question. If correct, move in any direction of choice. The teacher determines how many
correct answers are required to reach a geographical landmark. Example: It may take 2 correct answers to get to the Black Hills.
How Points are Scored: Reaching a U.S. landmark counts as one rally point. Once the team has reached a
particular landmark's rally point, they may travel through it again but will not collect that point again.
What happens when a team misses a question? The team's turn is over. The next team has an opportunity to
answer it and move.
Landing on the same landmark: Two teams can pass each other, but can not occupy the same space.
Ending the game: When class time is done, the teams share a "Good game!" sportsmanship handshake.
