Track & Field News Bowl

Game Show jeopardy | Pigskin | Slam Dunk | Road Rally Geography | Track & Field | RPS

Object of the Game: For teams to earn as many points as possible by running around the track.

Setting up the Game: Divide the class into teams of four. The students should create an oval with a 400 meter track. Each student has an individual token to move around the track. Players with matching colored tokens are teammates.

Gun’s Up: The first runner/student chooses a distance question.

  • Answering a News Bowl 10-pointer takes the player 100 meters or 1/4 of the track.
  • Answering a News Bowl 20-pointer takes the player 200 meters or 1/2 of the track.
  • Answering a News Bowl 40-pointer takes the player 400 meters 1 lap of the track.
  • Answering a News Bowl 80-pointer takes the player 800 meters 2 laps of the track.

How points are scored: Points are scored when a player or a team via a relay passes 400 meters (one trip around the track).

Example: If four different students choose four 100 meter questions and answer them correctly they will score 1 point for their team. If a player chooses a 400 meter question and the team answers correctly that player scores 1 point for their team. Members of the team choose their own question but can get help from their teammates.

What happens if a runner misses the question? The question is left open for the next team to answer correctly. Once the missed question is answered correctly by a team, then the next question is chosen by the next team in line to start running.

Example: If Team 1 misses a 400 meter question and Teams 2 and 3 both miss it, then Team 4 may answer it correctly to score 1 point for the 400 meter question. Team 2 will then choose the next question.

Ending the game: When class time is done, students will share a “Good game!” sportsmanship handshake.

Optional: 10 minutes before class is over each team can choose a bonus question worth a mile run scoring them 4 point if answered correclty.
